Marylyn has worked in the technical communication profession since 1983 as an individual contributor, a manager, and a director. An STC Senior Member, Marylyn has served as president of the STC WDCB chapter for the 2008-2009 year, and as 1st Vice President the previous year. She has presented at STC international society and STC WDCB chapter events, and has authored event reviews and a column called "The Manager's Files" for the STC WDCB newsletter, The Capital Letter. In 2008, she won three awards for excellence and merit in the chapter competition for technical documentation.
As a volunteer leader for the STC WDCB chapter, Marylyn strives to draw out the best in each of the volunteers. In fact, during her term as president, the chapter won the STC society's Community of Distinction award, for which it was formally recognized at the STC Summit in June 2009. Her strategic plan for 2009-2010 is to develop a sound succession plan for chapter leadership through increased involvement from new volunteers and mentoring from experienced volunteers.
Keeping up with current trends in the profession, Marylyn retains a fresh and interested perspective. She studies XML, usability, plain language, content management, and information architecture, as well as general management and consulting. Marylyn understands the technical communication profession and has a keen sense of where it is heading. She wants to nurture the chapter membership in its professional development, helping to increase the value of technical communicators in the workplace.
Marylyn is also a participating member of the Usability Professionals Association – DC Metro chapter, DC Web Women, and DC Information Architects. She holds a B.S. in education and an M.A. in English from the University of North Texas.
